Radar level gauge is a highly reliable non-contact level measuring instrument. Its radar wave can also penetrate many foam or smoke, steam media, and can reliably measure the accurate value of its liquid level without being affected by the changing environment. Because of this, radar level gauge has been widely used in the refining industry. The Rosemount 5400 series radar level gauge adopts radar pulse wave technology, low power consumption, two wire 24VDC power supply, intrinsic safety, high accuracy, and is widely used in our company.

Introduction to the working principle of radar level gauge
The working principle of a radar level gauge is to emit microwaves through an antenna to the level of the measured medium, and then measure the time of microwave emission and reflection back, in order to obtain the liquid level inside the container as an instrument. The 5400 series radar liquid level scoring includes two different models, 5401 and 5402, of which 5401 [6 GHz] is a low-frequency transmitter, which is mainly applicable to turbulence, heavy steam, foam or occasions where the antenna is vulnerable to accumulation; 5402 [26 GHz] is a high-frequency transmitter with a narrow radar beam width, which can be applied to devices with higher or narrower nozzles.

Parameter settings for 5400 series radar level gauge
The basic configuration of the 5400 series radar level gauge can be completed using Rosemount radar host software (RadarMaster), field communicators, AMSTM kits, DeltaV, etc. As instrument maintenance personnel, our most common method is to set parameters through a field communicator, among which the following parameters are more important: Tank Height, Range Values, Upper Null Zone, Set Threshold. If the data is not set accurately, it will directly affect the measurement results. The output of the radar in a fault state can be defined by setting the alarm mode Alaem Mode. In addition, the Loop Test function can also play a significant role in circuit debugging before starting work.

Under the diagnosis/maintenance menu, the instrument parameters can be restored to factory settings (Fdctor setting), the instrument can be restarted (Restart Device), and loop testing, diagnosis, and simulation can also be performed.
Basic setup
① The length unit can be configured and set in the Measurement Unit;
② In the Tank setup, you can configure the Tank Type, Tank Bottom Type, and Tank Height;
③ In AO settings, range values, alarm mode, and PV is can be configured. In addition, the damping value is also configured under the basic settings menu.

Fault cause analysis
The common cause of this malfunction is water droplets or dirt under the radar level gauge transmission antenna or isolation window;
Fault handling
Remove the liquid level gauge and use a clean and soft cotton cloth to dry any water droplets or dirt under the antenna or isolation window. After restarting the liquid level gauge, it can generally return to normal. It should be noted that when cleaning the radar level gauge transmission antenna, it is best to use a silk or soft cotton cloth dipped in alcohol, gasoline or other solvents to wipe the transmission antenna. Alkaline solvents should not be used for cleaning, and the transmission antenna should be wiped clean.
Frequent automatic restart of radar level gauge
Fault cause analysis
The restart fault occurred suddenly during the use of the radar level gauge, and the circuit was connected to the Emerson DCS, powered by a two wire AI card. The display window of the radar level gauge suddenly goes black and shows that it is in the process of restarting; After the restart is completed, the radar level gauge display window shows that the level gauge is in the measured liquid level. After 3-5 seconds, the display window shows a high liquid level alarm, and the radar level gauge display window suddenly goes black. Then, repeat this process. We suspect that the radar level gauge has malfunctioned. After replacing it with a new radar level gauge, the issue has not been resolved, indicating that it is not a problem with the instrument. Therefore, we will conduct a detailed inspection. During the inspection process, we found that the signal circuit of the instrument was undamaged and well grounded, and the shaking table detection was normal; The output voltage of the AI card is measured to be around DC23.8V; The radar level gauge works normally after being directly connected to the control room. During the restart process of the radar level gauge, it was found that the instrument power supply was around DC15V when the level gauge high alarm occurred, which was lower than the minimum required DC16V for normal power supply of the radar level gauge. Due to the installation distance of the radar level gauge from the DCS cabinet, which is about 100m, we determine that it is caused by insufficient load capacity of the DCS two-wire AI card;
Fault handling
Connect the DC24V power supply and radar level gauge in series to the DCS four wire AI in the circuit to form the circuit. After nearly half a year of observation and use after improvement, the frequent restart phenomenon of the radar level gauge has been completely resolved.
